Director of Children and Care Ministries
*Sunday School is offered every Sunday, September through May, from 10:00-10:45 in the education building. Outside of weekly classes, we also have a Birthday Party for Jesus in December, an Easter Egg Hunt in the Garden in the Spring, and other special events throughout the Sunday School year. Preschool (3’s) through First Grade
Our youngest learners use the ‘Bible Story Basics’ Cokesbury Curriculum, which incorporates Bible stories, activities, crafts, videos, and games into a full faith experience for children. Led by dedicated, creative volunteers from our congregation who are Safe Sanctuary certified, these classes meet downstairs in the education wing in the following rooms:
Preschool 3’s and 4’s: Rm. #120
Kindergarten & 1st Grade: Rm. #125
Kingdom City (Grades 2-5)
Upstairs in the education wing, the hallways have been transformed by artists from our church into a city street in biblical times! Our Kingdom City leaders utilize Cokesbury’s ‘PowerXpress’ curriculum. ‘PowerXpress’ is a rotation model curriculum using art, cooking, games, music, science, storytelling and Puppets to teach God’s word. There are four units throughout the Sunday School year focusing on a different story from the Bible, each culminating in a ‘deliverable’, such as a musical, science fair, puppet show, etc. Children check in at the Kingdom City welcome desk at the end of the hall to find out where their adventure will begin each Sunday! For more information, or to register your child, contact Heather Harman at email@example.com
Nursery and Children’s Church
We are pleased to offer a staffed Nursery during all of our Sunday services for children under 5, and Children’s Church for children ages 5-10. Our staff is Safe Sanctuary certified and background checked. The Nursery is in the education wing in Rm. # 122, and Children’s Church meets next door in Rm. #124. The Nursery provides a safe, fun place for your little one to enjoy while you attend a service or class. Pagers are available for us to contact you if your child needs you. Children’s Church offers a bit more structure for the older children, utilizing a lesson plan with games and crafts that reinforces the Children’s Message and scripture readings each Sunday. Nursery is also provided for special church events and meetings. Please contact Heather Harman at firstname.lastname@example.org, or at the church office to inquire about Asbury’s Nursery.
The Children’s Message is offered near the start of the 8:45 CAYR and 11:00 services each Sunday, September through May, by Ms. Heather or one of her helpers. The Puppets for Christ perform on the 4th Sunday of every month. All children are welcome to come forward to hear a mini-sermon that was designed just for them, explaining the scripture reading for the day in words they will understand. After the Children’s Message, children are invited to either stay for worship, or leave the service with the Nursery staff to attend Children’s Church or Nursery.
Christmas Craft Workshop
The workshop is usually offered on the first Saturday in December from 10-12:00. Children are invited to come and make several Christmas crafts with our helpful volunteers! A great way to get children and families in the Christmas spirit!
Trunk ‘R’ Treat
Offered each year on the Sunday before Halloween, Trunk ‘R’ Treat is a safe, fun community event for families and kids of all ages! The evening begins inside Fellowship Hall with a hot dog dinner provided by Asbury’s Youth Group, and a wonderful show given by the Puppets for Christ, and culminates outside, where children are greeted by dozens of decorated cars offering treats! Cars must be pre-registered to participate and offer treats. Prizes are awarded for the best decorated vehicles! Watch for registration information in early October.
Vacation Bible School
Don’t miss Asbury’s VBS, which will be held Sunday-Thursday, July 12-16, 2020. It’s 5 evenings of fun for children ages 3-11. The theme for 2020 is The Knights of North Castle!
Puppets For Christ
Children can enjoy seeing performances by the Puppets for Christ all throughout the year! They can be found the 4th Sunday of every month (September-May) in all services. They also perform at Trunk ‘R’ Treat, Fall Festival, and other church activities and in the community. You won’t want to miss their Spaghetti Dinners!
Third Grade Bibles
On Christian Education Sunday in late September each year, all 3rd graders are presented with a beautifully engraved children’s Bible. This gift is made possible by the generous donation of the Holloway family, in memory of Marianna Holloway.
